Location and Lodging
Great Lakes courses are offered at our worksite between Ely and Isabella, Minnesota, a few miles from the Boundary Waters Wilderness. The school is on Sand Lake - 40 miles north of Two Harbors, 30 miles southeast of Ely,
70 miles from Duluth Airport. Rustic facilities include wood-heated log bunkhouses, log classroom, freshwater wells, parking for campers/trailers, and an old-fashioned Finnish sauna for bathing. Bunkhouses, sheds, privies and sauna (photo to right) are all of log construction. Most buildings are of Scandinavian scribed saddle-notched construction, but we also have examples of French-Canadian piece-en-piece and hewn dovetailed log buildings at the school. (See images below.)
There are several resorts and National Forest campgrounds nearby for those who bring family or friends. Should non-registered family members or friends wish to stay on school premises, cabin rentals are often available at a per-person rate.
